Microsoft to Launch iPad Apps

According to a tweet from popular Microsoft blogger Paul Thurrott, Seattle based Microsoft is working on new iPad specific apps.  No word yet from the team in Redmond on what the apps might be, but speculation is that Balmer and Co. will release iPad versions of their existing iPhone apps.

Currently Microsoft has four iOS apps for the iPhone and iPod Touch but none that are iPad native.  Micosoft’s current iOS apps are:

  • Windows Live Messenger – IM client
  • Bing – Custom search app for Microsoft’s Bing search engine
  • Tag Reader  – app to read special Microsoft multi-colored barcodes & quickly get more information on products
  • Seadragon Mobile – high-resolution image browser

There has been some speculation the Microsoft might also introduce an Office or productivity app for the iPad but there has been no official word form Microsoft on their future iOS plans.

iPhone game Angry Birds lands on Android

The ubiquitous iPhone game Angry Birds has migrated to Android devices, meaning Apple’s most popular app is now available to other smartphone owners who rely on Google’s operating system.

The infuriatingly addictive game, in which birds must bomb the fortresses of a gang of green pigs to reclaim their stolen eggs, has been a massive hit on the iPhone and iPad with almost 20 million downloads. The game, costing 59p in the UK, is the number one paid-for app in 60 countries. A free trial version has been downloaded 11 million times while the iPad app has been downloaded 200,000 times – even though it costs a hefty $4.99 in the US.

Finally, An Official Twitter App for the iPad

Last week, the official Twitter app for the iPad was released, which cheered up many “TwitterHolics” and iPad owners, having waited for the app since the iPad was released almost half a year ago.

But despite being anticipated for such a long time, first hands-on impressions suggest the app itself is kind of confusing, though good overall – but is it the best iPad Twitter app? Well, that depends on what type of “Twitterer” you are.

Apple details iOS 4.2; ramps iPad production to 3 million per month

Apple has released a dedicated page on apple.com detailing some of the features of the forthcoming iOS 4.2 update that will unify the iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad operating systems. The page highlights some of the most coveted features of iOS 4 (currently only running on iPhone and iPod touch) that will finally debut on iPad, including:

* Multitasking. A simple double-tap of the home button brings up a quick-switch interface allowing users to easily jump back to recently used Apps. Multitasking also allows for Apps like Pandora to run in the background while you surf, e-mail, or catch up on the news.

* Folders. Adding organization was essential for iOS, especially considering the ever-growing myriad of Apps available on the App Store. Just drag one App on top of another and iOS automatically creates a folder. You can even store it in your dock for quick access to your favorite Apps.

FaceTime on iPods could change the way we chat

We’ve been promised video calls for years, but they’ve never really taken off – but thanks to last night’s Apple announcements, we might need to smarten ourselves up whenever the phone rings.

Apple changed music with the iPod – and it looks like it’s going to use the same bit of kit to change the way we talk, too.

Adding the FaceTime video calling system to the iPod touch means that FaceTime may be heading for prime time.
